Deep amber, red golden (with a slight pink hue) sparkling with a copper glow. Medium to high intensity aromas with a briny hint of sea air. Dry, medium bodied and smooth, redolent of honey and cream, faintly salty with a slight spicy note and a sweet long-lasting finish.

The soft, toasty nose gives way to flavors of dried fruit and a clean thread of toast and malt. Balanced and classic with a long, rich finish, this is a lesser-known but high-quality single malt that’s worth your attention.

Coconut and vanilla aromas mix with a hint of fresh pear. The palate shows tire rubber and peat smoke, with a hint of black licorice and a flare of clove heat. Adding water brings more licorice and a flurry of black pepper to the fiery finish.

Founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wick's celebrated herring boom, the Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly Scotch whisky distilleries on the British mainland.

The prohibition in Wick as well as the economic depression that followed spelled trouble for Pulteney Distillery. In 1930 the production ceased and the distillery was mothballed for over twenty years. In 1951, when the demand for whisky in post-war Europe started growing, the site was acquired by Robert “Bertie” Cumming, a solicitor from Banff. The production restarted soon after and has not stopped since.

“A good gulp of hot Scotch Whisky at bedtime–it’s not very scientific, but it helps!”

Alexander Fleming, Scottish inventor of penicillin, prescribed it as a cure for the common cold. Today Single Malt Scotch Whiskies are prized by enthusiasts and aficionados the world over for their rarity, age and complexity. By definition these must be produced in Scotland from a single distillery and made entirely from malted barley, using a pot still. The appearance, aroma and flavor of a Single Malt Scotch Whisky can vary widely depending on whether it was produced in the Highlands, Lowlands Islands, Speyside, Islay or Campbelltown regions.
